Each year the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) and its member associations join with a coalition of unions and activists across North America to organize a week-long series of events highlighting fair treatment of all contract academic staff - Fair Employment Week (Oct. 23rd – 27th, 2017).
Today members of WUFA's Sessional Committee hosted a MAKE IT FAIR: A CAUT Fair Employment Week Event booth in the CAW Centre between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Fair Trade Coffee and Cake was provided. There was a great turnout and positive feedback from students. Canadian universities’ growing dependency on limited term and contract faculty - and the precarious conditions of this employment- was the subject of today's event.
An increasing number of teachers at Canada’s colleges and universities are trapped in precarious contract and part-time work. Contract work has quietly gone from a short-term stepping stone to a career-long condition. Many earn less than a living wage.
